When I first read the Silmarillion, I was a bit confused by most of it. Was it just me, or did you understand it completely? I'm just interested in your general thoughts about it.

How the hell do you start a new thread???!!! I wanted to add a thread about Tolkien's Children of Hurin but can't figure out how to do it. So I'm putting this post here and hoping a Mod will put it into a thread entitled "Children of Hurin Discussion Thread." =============== The Children of Hurin was released April 17, and hopefully will create the kind of furor that will bring back some of the old gang! (And they're already talking about making a movie or movies of it — PJ, are you sniffing the wind???) Here is an interview with Adam Tolkien on the book. (The top of the page is in Spanish; the English is below.) And here is a Wikipedia article that tells you pretty much all you need to know before you buy — very informative! Evidently this story is even darker than The Silmarillion. LOTR at least had a more or less happy ending, and TH was the happiest of all. From what I gather, this will be a challenge for sensitive souls. And with that caveat, let the discussions begin! And just in case, you can pre-order (USA) right here, and in the UK right here along with a list of ancillary accoutrements! Barley

The beginning of the Silmarillion is, indeed. I was only 100% sure what I was reading after I got to the Valar coming. Maybe because the whole book is just less and less mythical as we go to the end.
