My money would be on the river people. Although again it depends on the terrain and how far away they start from each other. If it's dense forest or somewhere with very low visibility then the hobbits would probably win (assuming it's a chance encounter and not an ambush) although if it's an open field then the water folk would slaughter the hobbits.

Not to mention that the Riverfolk woud have range. So they could kill a good few without even being in reach of their swords.

But say that the Hobbits ran in for hand to hand, without losing many and then the bows would become useless and all the River Folk would be slaughtered.

So you're suggesting more of an ambush? The hobbits manage to sneak up close and jump the river folk? In that case the hobbits would probably slaughter them. They've got superior numbers and better weapons for a melee. The only exception to this rule is if the river folk can use a bow like Legolas, in which case the hobbits are stuffed...

Well I dont think they can because Legolas is an elf and they are Riverfolk. Although they could always stab with the arrows.

The Stoors would win. Unless of course all your Hobbits were Tooks and/or Brandybucks.
Now, arrows are the best weapon if in the right hands. They can penetrate armour and be fired from any distance, although work better long range. The Stoors, I think are as adventurous as Tooks or Brandybucks and as such would win, if...
If the Shire battalion was made up of Baggins, Bracegirdles, Boffins and other "upper-class" families, the Stoors win. However, considering the Tooks and Brandybucks history (Bullroarer, Pippin and Merry) they would swing the battle.
It depends on how close the Hobbits get. In a face-off, over a distance, the Stoors win as they only have to take out several to even it up, and they don't even have to take out two each. The battle would be over quickly if that was the scenario.
However, an ambush would most likely end in Hobbit victory, sheerly through numbers. The Stoors would come close, and arrows are more deadly at close range.
Overall, I say the Stoors.

So Stoors (Riverfolk) win. Is that it?

10 Dunedain vs 20 Orcs. Dunedain are ambushing in lightly wooded terrain during the day.

Dunedain would win no matter what. In the day also. Orks dont like the sun and so probably wouldnt attack in the daytime anyway.
Dunedain are extreamly good fighters and orks, well their just orks.

Well then lets up the stakes a little. 10 Dunedain discreetly defending the boarders of the Shire from 20 Warg Riders. It's night, woodland, only a little bit of light from the moon.

I think I'd still say Dunedain.

I'm inclined to disagree to some extent. With Warg riders you get two for one, seeing as Wargs are good fighters, plus you have the actual riders. So, 10 Dunedain spread out along the Shire border against 40 wargs/riders? I'm sorry, but that's a tough fight. Theoden's men (movie only, 150 or whatever) had a hard enough time against similar numbers, and as such the 10 Dunedain would have to kill two Wargs and their riders each, which is possible, but at night the Wargs have advantage.
The fight would be close, but the SHire borders are mainly woodland, so I would agree only because of this factor. Dunedain win, but with great loss.

Yes I never said they wouldn't lose most of them but they would still win.
