Gandalf sat at the defendant's desk, and looked at the judge, who read out the charge.
"Gandalf you have been brought here on a charge of theft of a pipe belonging to Gimli son of Gloin. How do you plead?" the judge asked.
"Not guilty, your honour. Now if you'd like I would like to call my first witness, Gimli himself," Gandalf responded.
The maiar allowed it, and Gimli entered. Gandalf stood, and said to him, "when did you first notice the pipe was missing?"

"I think it was somewhere before Isengard, which is when I first needed it," Gimli said.
"And is there any proof that you didn't have your pipe?" Gandalf asked.
"It says I needed one in the Red Book, and also present when I didn't have a pipe were Merry, Pippin, Legolas and Aragorn."
"Aha. And what makes you think you lost it in Moria?"
"I never said anything about losing it in Moria," Gimli said.
